It is good to be back :-)

A whole different world

October 1, 2010 · Posted in Travelling · 3 Comments

Two week in Manchester already. It is much more different than I originally expected. I thought I will be missing Greece but I am really happy that I proved myself wrong. The atmosphere here is spectacular. With all the freshers around I feel like 18 again :p.

The first week was like a 7-days party. Plenty of events around the University area ( and not only ), plus the big Erasmus party, made me understand that having fun in UK is exactly the opposite of what we call “party” in Greece. People here  dancing everywhere, doing theme parties and they do NOT need huge amounts of alcohol to have fun. They have fun because they feel like it not because they are wasted. Anyway…

I also took a couple of Salsa (O_0) lessons. I would never thought I would do that. It was quite fun in the end I must say.

This week was the first week of semester. The courses are quite fair, but they are moving quite fast, so unless you want to study like crazy in the end, you need to start studying early enough. The university is quite amazing. The lectures are pretty cool, and the labs even better. I really enjoy it. They require many hours of self-studying but, hey, this is why I am here after all :-)

Gentoo-wise, I had to drop my activities in many areas like retiring myself from kernel and Qt. I will keep doing amd64 and QA/treecleaning work for as long as I am capable to. Furthermore I am about to join the recruiter area. This is actually good because I can recruit more and more people so I can slack more :-). I am kidding of course, but it is good to try and bring more and more motivated people to Gentooland.

You may see some photos here.

The road to Manchester

September 6, 2010 · Posted in Gentoo, Linux, Travelling · 11 Comments

Some of you might already know that I am moving to Manchester/UK this year ( at least ) to attend a MSc course at the University of Manchester. The Computer Science Department offers a variety of courses hance I am not sure which pathway I am gonna choose yet. The Computer System Engineering MSc looks rather good but I will have to wait for the 1st week of lectures before I make my choice.  In any case, moving to UK is quite an experience, and I am really excited about that :)

Even though the motivation about Gentoo development is anything but high, I was quite worried about the fact that I couldn’t bring my two “dev” machines[1][2] with me so all I have is my laptop and my netbook, but lets face it, you can’t do much development on such hardware :-/.  I could easily forward a dozen of ports on my router in order to remotely administer all my services but, when it comes to security, this is a serious drawback. This really left me with one choice: Openvpn :).  Thanks to this guide, the whole setup was easier than I originally thought. Now, I am able to access my local network from anywhere. Furthermore, tmux[3] makes the whole /remote/development process much easier :). What a great app \o/

Summer Vacations: Molyvos

August 3, 2010 · Posted in Travelling · 5 Comments

This summer I chose a more quiet place for my vacations. I visited Molyvos, a traditional village located at the very north side of Lesvos island. 2,5 hours away ( on boat ) from my small town, seemed like an excellent choice for this summer. See what I mean :-)

Visiting London

April 30, 2009 · Posted in Travelling · 1 Comment

Taking a short break from my university studies , I decided to visit London. That was my forth time in UK but my first stay in London. The other three times I was mainly visiting Liverpool . Once in London, I rose to the chance and enjoyed a wonderful musical (again!) : Lion King. Seriously guys, this is something you must experience at least once in your life. The atmosphere was extraondinary , the music was simply awesome and the actors were brilliant. Two years ago I did a quick stop in London ,before going to Liverpool, in order to enjoy another musical: Phantom of the Opera. It, too, was amazing!

Since I am a crazy Chelsea fun, I obviously took the first tube to Chelsea’s Stadium, Stamford Bridge .Luckily that day ,there was a Champions League match between Chelsea and Liverpool. OMG; what a game! :)

Easter day was awsome. We end up having feast with friends at Gerrards’ Cross . It is a quite nice village, only  20′ out of central London.

We , as in Greek people , consider food as a top priority :). Las inguanas was a great place to taste spicy food and have exotic drinks :). I strongly suggest to give it a shot if visiting London.

IMAX 3D cinemas was another amazing experience. Unfortunately, It’s very unfortunate we don’t have  these  in Greece. We watched “Monsters VS Alliens” which was quite entertaining.

On the last day we visited Hyde Park. It was a unique experience. I could never image such a park could exist in a city of that size. I wonder why Athens doesnt have such places …

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the way London’s residents respect their city and the envroment.

Overall, I really enjoyed that trip and I will definitely be revisiting London:)
