Lightdm on Gentoo: Artwork needed
I recently pushed lightdm to Gentoo portage tree. I was in a good mood so I decided to create a Gentoo specific configuration ( the one you get if gtk and branding flags are enabled )
However, if you consider yourself an artist, you can send me your own lightdm-{gtk,qt}-greeter.conf + background image along with a screenshot and if you are lucky enough, I will use your own configuration on future lightdm releases ;-)

I’ve swiched login managers four times in the last month, but sadly I had to go back to GDM just because Slim and LXDM screwed up Gnome (like empty program menu, no Shut Down-button, etc). GDM in Gentoo is ugly as hell, so it would be nice to just throw it out.
The reason I started out trying to replace it was that it takes forever to log into Gnome though, so I hoped the bulk of GDM would be some of it. But can’t say that slim really made that much difference. There are just some annoying UX things that sucks in GDM, like where focus is as default, how it looks, etc.
I’ve never had problems with any DM but I don’t think is relevant to this blog post ;)
I use startx w/o password, I was thinking about password protecting it, but I’d probably end up writing login to console anyways.
1) console is sexy.
2) console can get you laid.
…
I lied about last one :D
Oh, awesome WM for the win, clickzors :)
I can’t start lightdm in rc-update default runlever, only a black screen there and I can do nothing but c-a-f1 to login in text-mode. But it can be start after login, manually run /etc/init.d/xdm start.
Hi,
I thought I’d give lightdm a try since, I started to want something more beautiful to start my awesome WM…. So it works… sort of….
The problem is that I have only black screen and nothing else. If I switch back and forth from TTY, then I get the gentoo wallpaper and if I wait a lot (did not count time), then I get the login dialog.
Could someone point me to where the problems might lie? How the wallpaper is set?
Cheers,
Ignas A.
Hello,
I tried the package, which I wanted to do a long time now, as I wanted to swap my cdm with something more fancy.
However, I encounter some problems – the whole login procedure seems to be very slow. That’s how it goes:
– I start xdm manually
– Black screen appears
– Switch to 1st TTY
– Then back to 7th TTY
– I see a wallpaper
– I wait for a long time
– I get the login widget and I login
And that happens all the time. Do you have anything in mind, which would help me solve my problems?
Cheers,
Ignas A.
Could be useful to open a bug report and attach an xdm log or an X log. I haven’t heard of such problems so far so something may happens in the background (maybe dbus related?) that prevents lightdm run successfully.
Hi once again,
sorry for the noise. I do not know what exactly has caused it, but for me it looks like udev-related problem. I needed to restart my computer to get proper behaviour, as during lightdm emerge I needed to recompile udev.
Thanks for your help!
Ignas.
