Time to say goodbye to an old friend: Qt3

January 1, 2010 · Posted in Gentoo

First of all, Happy new year :). I hope 2010 to bring more joy and happiness to you and your family.

This post is a small notice for those who haven’t been informed yet about the Qt3 removal schedule on Gentoo Linux.

That’s been said, you should consider upgrade to Qt4 ( which is unlikely you haven’t already ) and upgrade your Qt3 applications to the Qt4 respective versions as well ( if possible ).

There is also a tracker on gentoo bugzilla in case you need to track the Qt3 removal progress or help us by filling related bugs ;)

    I use few packages which depends on qt3 and can’t be compiled with anything else:

    net-im/sim-0.9.4.3-r3 (x11-libs/qt:3)
    net-misc/kiax-0.8.51-r1 (>=x11-libs/qt-3.2:3)
    net-voip/twinkle-1.4.2 (x11-libs/qt:3)

    what does it mean for me?.. Are you going just kill such packages?
    I can’t find any alternatives for kiax, for example.

    Hello to all and Happy New Yea!
    There are quite a few applications in userland outside the portage tree which have not been ported yet to qt4. In my case it is “drm” (digital radio mondiale, not the other thing) and “engauge digitizer” (a plot digitizing application). Would be nice to keep qt3 on the tree for these (maybe legacy) applications even if it requires installing an overlay.

    Yeah, we are aware that there are some Qt3 applications that don’t have a respective Qt4 version. In such cases we plan to move those apps to kde-sunset overlay [1] where kde3 will rest there as well :)

    Happy new year to everyone!
    I’ve just a little question… what about the linux kernel configuration app? I’ve two amd64 machines, one of them without qt3, looking at bug 133751 it’s very old, seems strange for me that the linux kernel upstream didn’t already updated, or found a way to port that app to qt4. There’s something i’m missing?

    I have some hardware requirements (and fear) preventing me from moving to Mythtv 0.23. Will 0.22 (which is qt3-based) also be moved to the kde-sunset overlay? Happy New Year!

    btw, this blog displays my browser incorrectly:
    www-client/chromium-bin-4.0.266.0_p33995
    Gentoo Linux ;-)

    Oops, I meant to say that I’m prevented from moving to Mythtv 0.22 from Mythtv 0.21. Mythtv 0.23 is the next, unreleased version. My bad.

    @Fabio

    To be honest, I am using make menuconfig to configure my kernel and not a graphical application :)

    @Jesse

    Well, according to bug ->http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=299222 we plan to stabilize a newer version of mythtv. But if you want the old ebuild you can keep it in your own overlay or poke us to move it to kde-sunset as well :)

    @Anton
    Well, I don’t use that browser. As I clearly state on the top of the page, this blog works fine only on those three browsers :)
